Measuring foot length and width
Place your foot on the paper so that all your weight is on your foot. Hold the thinnest pencil possible, perpendicular to the ground, and trace your foot on the paper. You can also use a box, placing your heel against the wall inside the box and drawing the outline. If your child is not able to stay still, mark only the heel, longest toe, and the widest part of the foot on the paper.
Once you have drawn the foot, measure the length with a ruler. from heel to longest toe (this may not be the big toe!) and the width of the widest part perpendicular to the long axis of the foot - you can choose suitable new shoes based on these measurements.
Is there enough space in your existing shoes?
Cut out a picture of your foot and try it on in the shoe. Is there enough room in both length and width? If there is only 5 mm or less in length, it is high time to start looking for bigger shoes.
You can also try placing your foot on a removable insole. This will give you some idea, but remember that The insole length does not indicate the actual inside length of the shoe.because there is usually more space inside the shoe.
How much allowance should you leave for new shoes?
The recommended allowance for length is 12 mm and for width 2-5…6 mm, depending on the shoe.. For winter boots, the margin can be larger (length approx. 15 mm, width approx. 6 mm), for sandals it is definitely smaller (length max. 12 mm, width a few mm). For rubber shoes, it is also recommended to choose a smaller margin (length approx. 1 cm, width approx. 4 mm). For a beginner walker, the length margin should be a maximum of 1 cm.
Also make sure that the shoe doesn't pinch or slip on your foot. Therefore, choose shoes that are right for your child with tall or short feet.
These recommendations are general. You should always base your decision on your child 🙂
