How much to leave in your winter boot stock
We recommend leaving a margin of 12-15 mm in winter and about 4-5 mm wide. If there is too much free space in the length/width/height of the boot, body heat will not be able to warm the air inside the boot and the foot will get cold. Similarly, if the shoe is too tight around the foot, the foot will also get cold because the blood supply to the foot will be poorer. What to do if your child still has cold feet with winter boots?
The first thing to do is to make sure there is enough room in the boots in terms of height, length and width. If everything looks right but your feet are still cold, you can try the following options:
- Replace the existing soles with thermal or other warm wool soles. If there is enough room in the height of the shoes, an extra sole can be placed on top of the existing sole.
- Swap cotton socks or stockings for merino wool socks or stockings. For example, Surtex socks are thicker (wool terry) and Vegateksa socks thinner.
- Keep your child moving constantly outdoors – it is very difficult to keep feet warm when standing/standing
- Some Finns put on thick woollen socks instead of a winter coat. If you’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work, be sure to try this option and give us your feedback!
Does my child have a high or low leg?
In order to buy a suitable shoe without trying it on, you need to get an idea of the height of your child’s foot. If the problem with many shoes is that they don’t close (all the way) and leave ridges on the back of the foot, it is very likely that the foot is high. If, on the other hand, the shoe laces are too long and almost reach the ground, leaving a lot of space between the top of the foot and the shoe, the foot is likely to be low. If you have not experienced either of these problems, your foot is probably of medium height.
The formula for measuring the height of a foot has been developed by Šťastné nôžky. This formula may not be 100% accurate, but for me and my children, for example, it’s a good fit. Measure the height of the foot with a soft tape measure by placing the tape measure against the floor on one side of the foot and gently pulling it across the back of the foot to the other side of the floor (at the highest point of the foot) and record the reading in cm where the tape measure touches the floor. Divide the reading obtained by the length of the foot in cm.
If the score is 0.7 or less, you have a low foot. A score between 0.71 and 0.81 indicates an average leg height, and a score of 0.82 and above indicates a high leg.
Which barefoot winter boots to choose for a child with narrow legs?

- Bundgaard Petit winter boots we have three different variants available. They are all made of smooth leather and fit narrow and low to medium height feet. They are also available in petite sizes, and as they have a very soft sole, they are also suitable for beginner walkers.
- Bundgaard Petit Mid Lamb are the warmest of them all, as they are lined with sheepskin. The Mid Lamb II is a newer model and has a slightly higher shin than last years boots.
- Bundgaard Petit Mid Winter Velcro has a natural wool lining that is thinner than the Lamb model. Suitable for warmer winters or cool autumns for children who are afraid of the cold.
- Bundgaard Petit Winter Boot has the same lining as the Mid Winter, but with a higher leg. There are clicks on both sides of the heel and the lower leg opens up to the foot for easy walking.
- Bundgaard Walker Pull Tex winter boots have a natural fur lining, a thermal insole and are membrane lined. Comfortable to pull on and with a very good high leg. The Pull II Tex is a newer model and is slightly lower on the leg than the Pull Tex II. So the older model is suitable for a slightly taller foot.
- Zeazoo Yeti R or Regular model has warm sheepskin inside. The boots are made of nubuck leather. If you have a problem with your child not fitting into any boots due to a high/pointy foot, these boots are worth a try! We’ve actually been able to fit them on children who couldn’t fit into any other boots in the shop, or who couldn’t get the clicks of any other boots to stick. Since Zeazoo boots do not have a removable insole inside, we recommend getting one if you have room for height inside the boot. Due to the special shape of the boot, they are also suitable for low to medium height feet, narrow to medium width feet.
- Protetics on winter soaps have a synthetic, not exactly the warmest lining inside. Suitable for medium height and slightly taller, narrow to medium width feet. Rather for children who are not very cold-hardy.
Which barefoot winter boots to choose for a child with medium width?

- Blifestyle Peccary and Ermine boots are suitable for medium height and also for taller and narrower feet. They have a warm furry wool lining inside, a deep pattern under the sole and are membrane lined. Peccary are made of smooth leather, with crinkled toe and a higher leg than the usual crinkled winter boots. Hermelin are made of rubberised water-repellent leatherette and natural felt. It has a buckle on the inside and the tibia is the highest of any children’s winter boot we have.
- Budgaard Orla winter boots are made of smooth leather, with membrane and wool lining. The leg section is rather shallow, which makes it suitable for children with poncho legs. The sole is stiffer compared to other Bundgaard models. Suitable for low to medium-height feet, also slightly wider.
- Froddo winter boots are available with natural fur lining (and membrane) or with sheepskin lining (without membrane). For children who are sensitive to cold, the Froddo wool lining may remain thin. Suitable for low to medium height feet, but Tex Suede model is suitable for medium and even high feet. Tex Suede has a zipper on the inside. Froddo’s newer winter boots have a deeper patterned outsole and a thermo pad under the non-removable insole. Watch the product video to see which sole you prefer on your boots. The Froddo boots with the highest tibia are. Tex Track Wool boots. They are adjustable from the top of the boot with an elasticated footbed.
If you have room for height, you may also want to add removable insoles. These could be removed at the end of the day to allow the shoe to dry.
- Jonap Jerry SLIM, Falco SLIM and B5 sv SLIM winter boots have a natural fur lining. The Jerry and B5 sv models have a slightly shorter leg than the Falco, the tongue is attached to the boot with a bellows and they are membrane. The Falco has a slightly higher leg but no membrane and the tongue is also loose at the boot. The Jonap SLIM model is suitable for narrow to medium width and low to medium height feet.
- Jampi Kids Bria winter boots are from the same manufacturer that makes Jonap footwear, just for bigger kids. They are available in sizes 31-35. The Bria boots have a natural wool lining, a membrane lining, and are not the highest on the shin. Suitable for medium width and low to medium height feet.
- Koel has a range of different winter boots. All of them have a fur lining or a sheepskin lining and a membrane. There are boots with shorter legs as well as with very high legs(Rana winter boots), for both smaller and larger children. They are suitable for medium widths and low to medium height feet.
- D.D.step winter boots are synthetic lined and come in 3 different models. The 063 model is made in sizes 25-36, the 073 model in sizes 20-31 and the 070 model in sizes 20-25. They are all quite similar in fit, fitting medium to tall feet. The 063 model has a slightly ‘sharper’ toe – more for those with the longest big toe, while the other toes taper off. The D.D.step shoes have a very flexible and therefore thin sole, and in colder weather we would definitely recommend adding warmer insoles. As the shoes are very flexible and soft all over, they follow the shape of the foot very well, making them suitable for wider feet.
- Vivobarefoot Snow winter boots are waterproof and have a nice high leg. The warm lining of the snow is slightly different from other winter boots, it is not furry. The boots are suitable for feet of medium width and medium height. Definitely not suitable for thin ankles. The outer sole has a good deep pattern.

- Jonap Jerry and Falco the wider version has a natural fur lining (except for the blue Jerry, which has a synthetic lining). The Jerry model has a slightly shorter leg, the tongue is attached to the boot with a bellows and they are membrane. The Falco has a slightly higher leg, but no membrane, and the tongue is loose on the boot. Jonap’s wider model is suitable for wide and low to medium height feet.
- Zeazoo Yeti winter boot are made of nubuck leather with a natural warm sheepskin lining. As Zeazoo boots do not have a removable insole inside, we recommend purchasing one if you have room for height inside the boot. The wider model is also suitable for very wide and tall feet. Due to the special shape of the boot, they are also suitable for low and medium height feet.
- 3F Bar3foot Cross Winter Wool winter boots are made of smooth leather, waterproof and have a warm sheepskin lining. They fit (very) wide and tall feet. The lower leg is not the tallest, but for a child with a wide yet tall foot, this is one of the few options available. Available in sizes 29-36.
- EF Barefoot winter boots have a warm wool-blend fur lining (the Ashi lining feels thicker) and are membrane lined. Suitable for medium to wide feet and rather low to mid-foot.
- Be Lenka Snowfox winter boots have all the features our customers are looking for: warm wool blend lining, high leg, membrane and are easy to put on. My child’s favourite for the second winter 🙂 Snowfox are suitable for low to medium height wide feet.
- Beda winter boots have a synthetic fur lining and membrane. They come with 2 pairs of insoles, one with thick fur and the other without. They are suitable for medium to wide feet and low to high feet.
- Fare Bare winter boots have a furry and warm synthetic lining and membrane, with a deeper pattern under the sole. They are available in sizes 23-37 for both small and large children. For larger feet, Fare Bare winter boots are available in the adult category. Suitable for medium to wide feet and low to medium high feet.
